The Department of Defense (DoD) has declared a fresh wave of security support for Ukraine, marking the Biden Administration’s fifty-first instalment of equipment deployment from DoD reserves to Ukraine since August 2021. This aid package encompasses added air defense capabilities, artillery ammunition, anti-tank weaponry, and other resources, aimed at assisting Ukraine in safeguarding its territorial integrity and combatting Russia’s relentless offensive.
This assistance draws upon previously authorized aid for Ukraine from past fiscal years under the Presidential Drawdown Authority (PDA), which remained available post the PDA reassessment process.
Valued at approximately $100 million, this package offers a range of capabilities, including:
- Stinger anti-aircraft missiles
- Deployment of one High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) along with supplementary ammunition
- 155mm and 105mm artillery rounds
- Tube-launched, Optically-Tracked, Wire-Guided (TOW) missiles
- Javelin and AT-4 anti-armor systems
- Over 3 million rounds of small arms ammunition
- Demolition munitions for obstacle-clearing
- Cold weather gear
- Spare parts, maintenance, and supplementary ancillary equipment
The United States remains steadfast in its collaboration with a coalition of about 50 Allies and partners, all contributing to Ukraine’s defense needs for the present and to deter any potential Russian aggression in the future. These allies and partners have collectively provided approximately $36 billion in security assistance to Ukraine. Under U.S. leadership, this global coalition has empowered Ukraine’s courageous forces to defend their sovereignty, win pivotal battles against Russian forces, and reclaim more than half of the territory seized by the invaders.
Supporting Ukraine with security aid not only serves as a strategic investment in national security but also acts as a deterrent against larger conflicts in the region and potential aggression elsewhere. Furthermore, it bolsters the nation’s defense industrial base and generates skilled job opportunities across numerous states in the United States. Congress must take action to endorse Ukraine’s cause by approving the President’s supplemental funding request.
