Niger’s military government has announced the immediate severance of diplomatic relations with Ukraine. The announcement was made by government spokesman Amadou Abdramane on national television on Tuesday.
The decision, according to Abdramane, stems from Ukraine’s alleged support for terrorist organizations. He called on the UN Security Council to address what he termed as Ukraine’s “aggression.”
The statement from Niger’s government highlighted the seriousness of the situation, citing Ukraine’s involvement in aggression against Mali. In solidarity with Mali, Niger has decided to break off diplomatic relations with Ukraine and refer the matter to the UN Security Council for a ruling on Ukraine’s alleged actions and their sponsors.
This move follows Mali’s announcement on Sunday to sever diplomatic ties with Ukraine, also citing Ukraine’s involvement in aggression against Mali. Mali’s transitional government referred to “subversive remarks” by Andriy Yusov, spokesperson for Ukrainian military intelligence, who admitted Ukraine’s involvement in an attack by armed terrorist groups. This attack resulted in the deaths of Malian defense and security personnel in Tinzaoutene, as reported by Malian government spokesperson Abdoulaye Maiga.
On July 30, the Malian Armed Forces reported significant human losses during intense fighting on July 26 against a coalition of terrorist forces in the northeastern part of the country.
In early July, Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger announced the formation of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States during the institution’s first summit.
