In defiance of international calls for a ceasefire, Israeli leaders conveyed to U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan their commitment to persist with the military offensive in the Gaza Strip. This move amplifies concerns about escalating civilian casualties.
During discussions in Israel, Sullivan engaged with officials, expressing the United States apprehension regarding the mounting civilian toll resulting from ongoing Israeli strikes in Gaza.
Addressing the press alongside Sullivan, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant underscored the prolonged nature of the conflict against Hamas, emphasizing an extended timeline surpassing several months. However, this prolonged conflict raises critical humanitarian concerns, particularly regarding the well-being of civilians caught in the crossfire.
The meeting between Sullivan and Gallant at the Israeli Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv encompassed discussions not only about the offensive in Gaza but also encompassed talks on the border conflict with Lebanon. Additionally, attention was drawn to the plight of numerous hostages detained in Gaza, casting a shadow on their humanitarian situation amid the ongoing conflict.
Gallant highlighted Israel’s resolve in countering maritime threats, alluding to recent attacks by Yemeni Houthi forces on Israeli-affiliated vessels and the city of Eilat. Subsequently, Sullivan held discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who expressed gratitude for U.S. support. Netanyahu specifically acknowledged the U.S.’s assistance in supplying munitions, obstructing attempts at the UN to halt the conflict, and aiding in the return of hostages. Nonetheless, the focus on military operations and support in the context of the conflict underscores the complex humanitarian challenges faced by civilians affected by the ongoing hostilities.
Sullivan reaffirmed the United States’ backing for Israel in confronting the terrorist threat, echoing the importance of addressing security concerns while also stressing the need to mitigate the humanitarian fallout from the ongoing conflict.
