Javier Milei, an outspoken far-right libertarian known for his strong anti-inflation stance and plans for radical governmental changes, has secured the presidency in Argentina, propelling the nation’s economy into an unpredictable phase.
With over 99% of votes tallied, the TV personality-turned-politician, often likened to Donald Trump and recognized for his Mick Jagger impersonations, claimed victory with 55.69% of the vote, surpassing his rival, center-left finance minister Sergio Massa, who secured 44.3%.
Addressing his jubilant supporters in Buenos Aires, Milei hailed the election as a “miracle” and heralded it as the start of Argentina’s reconstruction.
Promising significant reforms to combat the country’s pressing issues of high inflation and widespread poverty, Milei signalled intentions to restore Argentina’s global standing while vowing for “drastic changes.”
Massa, conceding defeat after receiving 11.5 million votes compared to Milei’s 14.4 million, acknowledged the people’s choice and conveyed his congratulations to Milei, announcing his withdrawal from frontline politics.
Milei’s victory sparked enthusiasm among his supporters, depicting him as an economic visionary capable of steering Argentina out of its severe economic crisis. However, there were concerns about the potential further economic turmoil following the election outcome.
During his campaign, Milei pledged to eliminate the central bank and shift to a dollarized economy to address the financial crisis plaguing nearly 40% of Argentina’s 45 million inhabitants living in poverty, while grappling with inflation exceeding 140%.
Internationally, Milei’s victory garnered support from various figures of the global far-right, including former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and former US President Donald Trump, who lauded the triumph as a step towards progress and freedom.
Yet, left-wing leaders like Brazil’s Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and Colombia’s Gustavo Petro expressed reservations about the extreme right’s victory in Argentina, highlighting concerns over Milei’s radical proposals and his controversial views regarding Argentina’s historical events.
Experts warned of the uncertainty ahead, emphasizing the gamble taken by many Argentine voters in their desperation for change amid catastrophic economic conditions. Concerns were raised about the potential for social unrest and political tensions as Argentina heads into uncharted territory with an untested leader.
The streets of Buenos Aires witnessed a mix of reactions, from joy to apprehension and anger, following the election outcome, reflecting the divided sentiments among citizens about the country’s future under Milei’s leadership.
