A fierce thunderstorm wreaked havoc in a coastal city of Argentina, claiming the lives of at least 13 individuals, as confirmed by Federico Susbielles, Bahia Blanca’s mayor on Saturday.
The devastating storm caused the collapse of a sports club’s roof in Bahia Blanca, tragically resulting in fatalities among those seeking shelter inside. Reports from local media revealed that the club was hosting a skating competition when the severe weather abruptly descended upon the city.
Federico Susbielles, the mayor of Bahia Blanca, corroborated the death toll in an announcement posted on the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter). “Regrettably, emergency services have confirmed the loss of 13 lives at the Bahiense del Norte club,” stated the municipality in a released statement.
Efforts by firefighters were underway at the site, with concerns raised about additional individuals potentially trapped under the debris.
The city encountered winds exceeding 140 kilometres per hour (87 miles per hour), causing widespread power outages in the region. Visuals depicting the intensity of the storm showcased powerful winds lashing tall buildings, while lightning streaked across the sky, enveloping the city in a haze.
Argentinian President Javier Milei conveyed condolences to the victims’ families in an official statement. “The president extends heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of those affected by the storm,” affirmed his office.
“Gusts of wind surpassing 150 km/h were recorded in Bahía Blanca, prompting an orange alert across various areas of the Buenos Aires Province. Presently, the National Cabinet, in collaboration with provincial and municipal authorities, is engaged in assisting the affected and managing the aftermath,” a statement shared on Mr Milei’s social media account outlined.
The presidential office urged residents to remain indoors until Sunday morning due to the destructive wind gusts prevailing in the area. “We advise the populace to stay updated through the meteorological service and, if necessary, to remain indoors during the early hours of the morning,” emphasized the official statement.
