Zambia Launches Master Plan to Allow Capital Market to Attract More Investment

Zambia on Thursday launched a master plan aimed at unlocking the potential of the capital market to attract investment.

The first-ever capital markets master plan is a comprehensive long-term strategy that sets out the primary framework for Zambia’s capital market development over the next decade.

“It is an important tool that seeks to organize various actors in a manner that will be convincing for holders of the capital to consider Zambia as a choice of destination for investments,” Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema said during the launch.

The master plan, he said, will ensure that Zambia becomes an attractive destination for not only local but also foreign investors, adding that the launch signals the government’s resolve to set in motion the necessary interventions required to fully develop capital markets.

He said the launch will enhance access to capital for small and medium enterprises, and facilitate the country’s transition to a green growth economy.

According to him, the plan also aims to enhance the government’s bond market by implementing measures to improve market operations.

The Zambian president further said the plan has a special focus on the development of new, innovative products or markets such as green bonds, private equity, venture capital and real estate investment trusts, among others.

He said Zambia’s aspiration was to become a financial hub that will seek to attract financing, including green financing, as well as a centre of financial deals, particularly in the green space.
