UNESCO and Huawei Deliver ICT Equipment for the TeOSS project

UNESCO and Huawei have collaborated to provide information communication technology (ICT) equipment to the Ethiopian Ministry of Education, marking a significant step in their joint initiative called the Technology-enabled Open School Systems for All (TeOSS) project. This support, highlighted in a recent statement by Huawei, aims to bolster education in Ethiopia.

The partners have provided 480 tablets, 48 laptops, 48 access points, and 24 smart boards to 24 secondary schools throughout Ethiopia. This significant donation underscores our dedication to ensuring quality and accessible education for all.

During the handover ceremony, Ayelech Eshete, the Ethiopian state minister of education, praised UNESCO and Huawei for their steadfast dedication to education, emphasizing the significance of their donation during this critical period. She emphasized that the provision of ICT tools will unlock a realm of opportunities for secondary school students, allowing them to access diverse educational resources beyond textbooks and connect with a vast global network for learning experiences.

The TeOSS project focuses on creating crisis-resilient school systems, ensuring the accessibility of comprehensive school education programs irrespective of location or emergencies. It aims to transform schools in low-resource settings into technology-enabled open schools, providing quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all, as outlined in the statement.

Rita Bissoonauth, the UNESCO representative to Ethiopia, highlighted the joint effort between UNESCO, Huawei, and the Ethiopian Ministry of Education to bridge the digital divide and establish resilient school systems. She emphasized that the initiative aims to improve the quality of education by enhancing ICT infrastructure and building the capacity of educators and educational institutions, with a particular focus on secondary education.

Bissoonauth remarked on the delivery of the latest ICT equipment to secondary schools across Ethiopia as a significant milestone in their collective journey towards creating an inclusive and equitable education system.
