Global tourism body vouch to develop Zim’s Tourism Satellite Account

United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has pledged to work with the Zimbabwean government to develop the country’s first Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) meant to accurately measure the importance of tourism to the economy.

The United Nations (UN) specialised agency entrusted with the promotion of tourism is set to work with Zimbabwean government to develop the Tourism Satellite Account (TSA) which will measure tourism’s contribution to the country Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the number of jobs the sector generates.

Zimbabwe expects to leverage on internal competencies around domestic tourism to unlock wider potential and enhance operators’ capacities on the interim.

In a statement, UNWTO Director for Africa Elcia Grandcourt highlighted the global tourism body’s readiness to ensure the successful development of the TSA system which will help measure the importance of the tourism to Zimbabwe’s economy.

“We are delighted to work again with the Zimbabwe in providing clear data that can help guide key decisions for tourism’s recovery and growth,” noted Grandcourt.

The tourism and hospitality industry is one of the key foreign currency earners in the country and employs thousands of people along the value chain.

According to the National Tourism Recovery and Growth Strategy, tourism sector has an important role to play in the attainment of the national vision as one for the four pillars underpinning economic growth alongside agriculture, mining and manufacturing.
