The United Nations Security Council strongly denounced the assault on the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA), resulting in the tragic death of one peacekeeper from Cameroon and inflicting injuries on five others this Monday.
Council President Nicolas de Riviere of France released a statement extending “heartfelt condolences and sympathy to the bereaved family of the fallen peacekeeper, as well as to Cameroon.”
Underlining the gravity of the incident in Mbindale, council members reiterated that “attacks targeting peacekeepers may amount to war crimes” and underscored the imperative for all parties to adhere to international humanitarian law.
The council urged the Central African Republic government to “promptly investigate this attack, with the support of MINUSCA,” and ensure that those responsible are held accountable before the law.
Expressing apprehension about the persistence of “illicit transnational trafficking networks” that finance and arm various groups within the country, the statement highlighted the escalating use of explosive ordnances, such as improvised explosive devices and landmines. These have resulted in numerous civilian casualties, property destruction, and disruptions to humanitarian activities. The council emphasized the urgent need for thorough investigations and concerted action to counteract this growing menace.
Council members reiterated their steadfast support for MINUSCA, emphasizing its crucial role in effectively fulfilling its mandate and safeguarding the security of UN peacekeepers in the region.
