JOHANNESBURG – South African mining magnate Patrice Motsepe has donated 1 billion rand to help South Africa in its fight against coronavirus. The billionaire’s donation will come from his group of companies, an official statement released on Saturday confirmed.
South Africa has recorded 1,170 cases of coronavirus and started its national lockdown on Friday, March 26, 2020 to mitigate the spread of this deadly global pandemic.
Motsepe’s pledge adds to the combined 2 billion rand donation made by the Oppenheimer and Rupert families towards the same cause. Government has also chipped in with a package worth more than 3 billion rand to assist industrial firms that have been badly affected by the impact of this pandemic.
According to Forbes, Patrice Motsepe has a net worth of US$1.5 billion. The 58 year old South African mining billionaire is the founder and executive chairman of African Rainbow Minerals, which has interests in gold, ferrous metals, base metals, and platinum.
