Dublin Airport, the largest in Ireland has warned that ‘significant queues’ will result in some people not making their flights today.
It follows weeks of delays at security because of staffing issues despite the facility saying it has hired more employees.
Around 50,000 passengers are expected to depart the airport over the course of the day.
In a statement, The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) said queuing outside Terminal 1 has been deployed since early morning as part of the airport’s contingency plans for the increased numbers of passengers travelling.
The Dublin Airport Authority added that it is working to ensure queuing times are minimal for all passengers, but anyone travelling from Dublin Airport today is advised to allow additional time.
It said Dublin Airport “apologises unreservedly to passengers for the delays encountered this morning”. The Dublin Airport Authority has said it will provide a refund to passengers who missed their flights as a result of long delays
Many people waited 2.5 hours or more to get through the lines outside and inside to security, with some experiencing even bigger delays.
One man got through security four hours after arriving in the Dublin Airport car park, while another who arrived five hours before their flight was “sceptical” they would make it.
Last month, DAA said it would work to “refine and adapt” its operations after passengers were forced to queue outside the terminal building during the Easter holiday period. Lengthy queues and wait times of several hours to clear security in the airport have been reported multiple times in the last three months.
