HARARE – Zimbabwe requires at least US$600 million to fully recover from devastating effects of Cyclone Idai that hit the country’s eastern provinces two years ago, ENN reports.
The position was asserted by United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) partnership liaison officer Clement Mhlanga during a tour of projects under the Zimbabwe Idai Recovery Project in Manicaland this week. “US$700 million was needed and the World bank provided US$72 million in great funding to reach the most affected communities across nine districts. Therefore at least US $600 million is needed for the affected to fully recover from the devastating effects of Cyclone Idai”, said Mhlanga.
This cyclone Idai funding gap comes after the World Bank funded US$72 million two years ago. The Word Bank aid was used to rebuild infrastructure and to restore livelihoods in Zimbabwean areas that were affected by the cyclone. Funded areas included ensuring the resumption of education at schools, giving care and treatment to people with health needs, and to capacitate village health workers on the health delivery cause.
