The Governments of Mozambique and Rwanda signed extradition and mutual legal assistance agreement, announced the Rwandan Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs on its website, quoted by Lusa.
The agreement was signed by the Rwandan Minister of State for Constitutional and Legal Affairs, Nyirahabamina Soline, and the Mozambican Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, Helena Kida, during her visit to Kigali last week.
“The agreements mean that Rwanda and Mozambique are now safe from criminals, which means that our citizens will feel safe,” said Nyirahabamina Soline.
The understandings provide for cooperation in fighting crime and the extradition of suspected criminals between the two countries.
The Rwandan community living in Mozambique has expressed several times the feeling of fear, due to actions of persecution allegedly carried out by the security services of Kigali against alleged opponents of President Paul Kagame, who runs the country with an iron hand.
Several figures from the Rwandan community have died in Mozambique in mysterious circumstances, which have never been clarified.
Rwanda has played an important role in restoring security in Cabo Delgado province, northern Mozambique, which has been terrorized by armed groups since 2017.
The country has had an armed contingent in the region since July 2021, which, along with Mozambican and Southern African Development Community (SADC) government forces, has been fighting insurgents in the province.
