Kigali’s city authorities, in collaboration with BasiGo, a Kenyan company, successfully launched a trial of electric buses in public transport earlier this month, following a similar test run of minibuses on Kigali streets.
This pioneering venture, supported by a $1.5 million investment from USAID, aims to bolster climate-resilient solutions in Rwanda.
The introduction of electric buses stands as a significant stride toward curbing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering sustainable transportation across the nation.
The buses were introduced in collaboration with AC Mobility, which incorporates Tap & Go technology for seamless bus fare payments through advanced technology.
Keisha Effiom, the USAID Deputy Mission Director, expressed, “This innovative project is poised to create a lasting impact on Rwanda’s public transport system.”
Rwanda’s investment in electric buses showcases its dedication to combating climate change by adopting cleaner, eco-friendly alternatives. These buses, powered by emission-free electric technology, promise to mitigate air pollution and contribute to a greener, healthier future for Rwanda’s populace.
The collaboration between BasiGoRwanda and USAID Innovation underscores the significance of international partnerships in addressing global challenges. Through this joint initiative, both organizations are spearheading sustainable development efforts and serving as a model for other nations.
The buses have a range of 300 kilometres on a full charge, with designated charging stations established in Kigali’s Kicukiro district.
Officials aim to introduce 200 buses onto Kigali’s streets within 18 months, each capable of accommodating 70 passengers.
Local Rwandans and experts have lauded the introduction of electric buses as a boost to Rwanda’s initiatives in advancing smart mobility systems, crucial for ensuring economic sustainability.
In July, the Rwandan government and Vivo Energy inked a deal to bring over 200 electric buses into the country, further promoting the use of electric vehicles in Rwanda’s transport landscape.
