Tanzanian authorities on Thursday announced plans to launch a livestock sector transformation plan aimed at strengthening breeding and animal health programs in the country.
Minister for Livestock and Fisheries Mashimba Ndaki said the five-year plan running from 2023 through 2027 is also aimed at increasing the contribution of the livestock sector to the national economy and improvement of individual livelihoods.
Ndaki announced the new livestock sector transformation plan at a meeting that brought together livestock stakeholders in the national capital of Dodoma to review the current livestock master plan ahead of the launch of the new plan.
He said the new plan will build on the successes of the old plan that was launched in 2017 to identify and strengthen priority livestock value chains and production systems.
According to the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries, Tanzania’s livestock population is 33.9 million. Of these, 96.5 percent are indigenous breeds grazed on natural pasture under communal grazing lands and 3.5 percent are improved ones kept under semi-intensive and intensive livestock keeping systems.
