MAPUTO – Mozambique has commenced the construction of gas to a power plant and transmission line projects worth more than US$1 billion in the southern province of Inhambane, ENN reports.
The groundbreaking project was officially launched by Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi on Monday and is being financed by the World Bank, African Development Bank (AFDB), Islamic Bank, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) Fund for International Development, the United States of America and Norway. It will have a power generation capacity of 450 megawatts.
“Today we mark a milestone in the framework of this endeavor to illuminate Mozambique”, said Nyusi as he expressed gratitude to the Temane project investors for believing in Mozambique.
“Our governance aspires that more than 10 million Mozambicans will have access to electricity for the first time in their homes by 2024,” the president further said, giving reference to the Temane gas to power thermal power plant, whose 450 megawatts power generation capacity is expected to create employment and improve the socio-economic status of the country.
The United States of America is supporting the Temane project through an S200 million direct loan from the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), the US Ambassador to Mozambique confirmed.
