Global Engineering Conference Advances Sustainable Solutions in Rwanda

The Global Engineering Conference, taking place in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, has convened leading engineering experts and high-level delegations from across the globe to discuss innovative strategies for a sustainable future.

Hosted for the first time by a sub-Saharan African nation, the event is organized by the Institution of Engineers Rwanda (IER) in partnership with the World Federation of Engineering Organizations.

In his opening remarks, Rwandan Minister of Infrastructure, Jimmy Gasore, emphasized the need for decisive collective action in addressing current challenges. “Through engineering innovation, we have the potential to create a sustainable future—not just for ourselves, but for generations to come,” he stated.

Running from Tuesday to Friday, the conference is centred around the theme “Engineering for a Sustainable Future,” aiming to tackle global challenges through engineering innovations while placing a strong focus on achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

IER President Gentil Kangaho highlighted Rwanda’s dedication to promoting sustainable engineering practices through this gathering. “We cannot achieve sustainable engineering in isolation; it demands a collaborative effort. This conference exemplifies our commitment to reaching this goal. It provides us with a platform to exchange experiences, knowledge, and innovations, particularly regarding the SDGs,” he remarked.

Papias Kazawadi, president of the Federation of African Engineering Organizations, noted that this event presents a significant opportunity for African engineers to acquire the knowledge necessary for advancing the continent’s development through sustainable engineering practices. “African engineers will gain valuable insights to help drive development through the SDGs,” he said.

The conference has drawn over 600 participants, including government officials, policymakers, academics, industry leaders, and engineers from various disciplines, including civil, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineering. It serves as a platform for knowledge sharing, collaboration on engineering solutions, and addressing global issues like sustainability, resilience, and inclusivity. Participants also have the chance to explore new technologies, forge partnerships, and collaborate on future initiatives.

Recognized as the world’s leading global engineering forum, the conference features a variety of workshops, discussions, and exhibitions showcasing the latest innovations from companies, research institutions, and startups, offering participants insights into cutting-edge developments in engineering worldwide.
