Brunei’s 5G Network to Enter Trial Stage

Brunei will conduct a fifth generation (5G) mobile network trial for cellphone subscribers for up to eight weeks.

According to a statement from the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry of Brunei Darussalam (AITI) on Saturday, AITI, working with Unified National Networks Sdn Bhd (UNN), the sultanate’s wholesale telecommunication service provider to both national and international clients, will conduct the 5G Mobile Network trial in collaboration with all three telecommunications service providers.

The trial is conducted before the official introduction of 5G services scheduled to launch in the sultanate in the coming months, utilizing new and existing radiofrequency spectrum to provide high-capacity bandwidth in all high internet traffic areas.

According to AITI, it is expected that the internet speed will be able to reach between 300 Mbit/s up to one Gbit/s using a 5G network, depending on the capacity and number of users in certain cell sites.

In April 2021, Brunei launched its 5G Pilot Project, aiming to demonstrate 5G Proof of Concept network environment, promote the feasibility of high-speed 5G mobile communications and raise awareness of the public for the adoption of 5G technology in the country.

UNN is in the final stages of fully modernizing its entire infrastructure to be 5G-ready.
