Farewell Internet Explorer: Microsoft finally shut down IE

Microsoft finally pulled the plug on Internet Explorer on the 15th of June 2022 shutting it down for good.

Microsoft has ended support for internet explorer on August 17, 2021, and Microsoft teams ended support for Internet Explorer on November 30 2020. Internet Explorer was set for discontinuation on June 15 2022.

Sean Lyndersay, Microsoft Edge program manager mentioned that Tue future of internet explorer on windows 10 is in Microsoft Edge.

“Microsoft Edge has Internet Explorer mode built-in, so you can access this legacy Internet Explorer-based websites and applications straight from Microsoft Edge  With Microsoft Edge capable of assuming this responsibility and moving the internet Explorer desktop 11 application will be retired and go out of support on June 15 2022, for certain versions of Windows 10,” Sean Lybdersay said.

Meanwhile, the web browser was first released in 1995 as part of the ads on package plus for windows 95 that year.

Later versions were created available as free downloads, or in-service packs and included in the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) service releases Windows and later versions of windows.

The browser reached its peak in 2003 with approximately 95% usage share. A new feature developed for Internet Explorer was discontinued in 2016 in favour of the new browser Microsoft Edge. This was the first time Microsoft planned to slowly phase out internet explorer.
