HARARE– China has pledged US$3 billion in international aid to developing countries as support for Covid-19 response, economic and social recovery post-pandemic, ENN reports.
Speaking at a diplomatic platform in Zimbabwe, the Chinese deputy ambassador to Zimbabwe Zhao Baogang mentioned that China had already provided assistance to more than 150 countries and 13 international organisations as part of their boundless Covid-19 response initiatives.
“We will also continue to provide aid in the coming three years”, Baogang further said as he also confirmed that his country will continue to provide vaccines to developing countries within its capacity. The development comes at a time the world powerhouses are scrambling for the control of Africa, with the G7 countries pushing for a global infrastructural development project to rival China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
The Belt and Road Initiative is China’s ambitious program to build physical and digital infrastructure to connect hundreds of countries from Asia to the Middle East, Africa and Europe, and is viewed by critics as China’s signature foreign policy to expand its global influence. The G7 countries are Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.
